Research Interests
A highlight of Dr. Carpenter's recent work is the project “Large-scale phylogenetic analysis of Hymenoptera,” which is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. This is a study of the entire Hymenoptera - more than 115,000 described species, perhaps as much as 10% of the species diversity of the planet. With three other CO-PIs, Dr. Carpenter has assembled an international network of more than 40 researchers, including postdoctoral scholars and students, for a five-year project. They are analyzing both morphological and molecular data, with the aim of a well-supported phylogenetic tree at the taxonomic level of family. Publications are planned to include a series of monographs and two books on the phylogeny of Hymenoptera, an interactive electronic key to Hymenoptera families, access to detailed morphological images through World Wide Web, and access to all the anatomical and molecular data for all Hymenoptera.
