Research Interests

Dr. Prendini’s research interests lie in the empirical study of phylogeny, macroevolution, speciation, biogeography, and comparative evolutionary biology, using scorpions as model organisms. Research focuses on phylogenetic revisions of the world scorpion fauna, using morphology, behavior and DNA. Reconstructing scorpion phylogeny is a prerequisite for revising scorpion familial classification, investigating biogeographical patterns at continental and intracontinental levels, and testing adaptational hypotheses. Prendini is presently revising and atlasing the Afrotropical scorpion fauna and testing adaptational and biogeographical hypotheses in the sub-Saharan region. Prendini is also developing a research program into the systematics of four poorly understood minor arachnid orders.  Besides arachnids, Prendini is interested in the evolution of insect-plant associations. Fieldwork has taken Prendini and his research group to Argentina, Benin, Bolivia, Chile, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Martinique, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Peru, Puerto Rico, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Trinidad & Tobago, Uzbekistan, and the Virgin Islands.
